42 Sa Fosca
A look into a Balearic Classic
Welcome back! This week we dive deep into the blue waters of Joan Bibiloni’s balearic ambient classic: BORN.
Today, I want to talk about the journey of a song, with its quiet beginnings on the balearic island of Mallorca in the late 80s. It’s timeless nature carried it through a multitude of fashionable genres and sounds, and now, almost 40 years after its release, the song still holds some magic that I can’t really explain.
Sa Fosca, is a song from Joan Bibiloni’s 1989 album, Born. The album is considered a balearic ambient classic, and it’s a perfect blending of traditional Spanish guitar playing, mixed with the gentle electronics of the late 80s.
It’s the 7 minute opener (on the original pressing), Sa Fosca, that steals the show for me. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of watching a balearic sunset, you know that the feeling is unmatched. If “balearic music” is a pursuit to capture that feeling, than this song is the absolute version of the genre. The languid intro, the unfolding of so many different melodies, all in their perfect place. There’s a softness to everything that really has to be heard to fully understand.
This song actually came into my life way later than I’d like to admit, and it came via a 12” record of Joan Bibiloni reworks, by two of my favourite producers, Telephones and DJ Fett Burger. The Telephones Coastal Dub pushes the tempo a touch, and adds the perfect amount of drums and hand percussion to turn the original into the perfect track to warm up a dancefloor with.
If you’re looking to go deeper into Joan’s music, definitely spend some time with Born, and El Sur, the retrospective compilation from Music From Memory.
And check out this great session/interview with Telephones and Fett Burger for more on them.
