It’s Enjoy Music No. 31, and believe it or not, it’s a rainy Monday morning here in Beautiful British Columbia! We’ve been having just about as lovely of a summer as you could imagine, and still a quiet, rainy morning seems to be what everyone around here needs. And even still: we’re keeping things sunny over here. We’re heading back to paradise today, aka five hot tunes that are guaranteed to sound good poolside.
Now, I’m about to jump on a plane to Los Angeles later this week, but before I go, I wanted to make sure you had five hot traxx sitting in your inbox, ready for whatever listening experience you may have in store for you this week. This week we keep things simple: Five Beautiful Balearic-leaning Groovers.
Also, I usually drop my plugs at the end of the stack, but this is a big week: my new record, Elegant Rhythms is out on Friday. To celebrate, I’ll be playing records at Gold Line in Highland Park on Thursday (8 PM to 11 PM), and playing digital files poolside at the always beautiful FWB Fest in Idyllwild (1 PM to 4 PM, alongside my bud Rowan Spencer). BIG weekend!
OKAY, let’s get into it. It’s Enjoy Music, baby!
Keytronics - Calypso In My House (1990ish)
Ooooooooh, AHH! Someone on Discogs.com had the audacity to complain about the vocal sample here. We don’t discriminate here at Enjoy Music HQ, but come on baby! There’s no better way to get feet and hips moving than a big vocal like this. This one was reissued back in 2017, aka the first big dream house revival, and to it’s still sounding pretty fresh to these ears. If this doesn’t send you straight to paradise, I don’t know if there’s much we can do for you here. Enjoy this beautiful version of Keytronics’ Calypso!
Harri Pierson - The Most Balearic Record In The World (2024)
A truly audacious title, with an absolutely rewarding payoff. This one’s going into the Enjoy Music Hall Of Fame! This one is guaranteed to instill a Balearic Mindset to whoever hears it. Take note of that actually: we all have people in our lives who Just Don’t Get It. Once again, we don’t discriminate! But this one could soften even the hardest of hearts. Also worth shouting out the wildly consistent Duca Bianco label for putting out this jam, and 19 other absolute gems. ALSO worth shouting out Harri, and all the other Test Pressing Forum readers. Truly one of the best corners of the internet. Enjoy The Most Balearic Record In The World!
Wallace - M’bira (2024)
I know, I know, this is turning into a Wallace stan stack. But good lord! This Tanzanite 12” has got to be one of the records of the year right? It bounces and flows in all the right ways. It’s also like the seventh knockout he’s released in only a couple of years. We’re witnessing a serious run here folks! What more can I say: Enjoy Wallace!
Gerd - Dance of Enjoyment (2024)
Dance Of ENJOYment! Right!? A huge new single from Gerd, on one of my favourite labels, Running Back, that’s got “NTS Tag: Balearic House” written all over it. Chances are you already know what to expect from an Enjoy Music Modern Dance Track Selection: percussion, piano stabs, 303 bass. It’s all here baby! In the club, around the pool, wherever you find yourself, this one hits the spot. Come see me DJ in the next few months, and you’re guarantee to hear this one. Enjoy Dance Of Enjoyment!
Jan Akkerman - She’s So Divine (1980)
Okay we’re winding things down this week with this absolute slapper from JAN. I played this one out in my warmup set before Flamingo Pier last week, and it made my night to have Dom from FP come up and tell me how much this one reminded him of a month he spent DJing in Bali. An absolute perfect summer jam. Also of note: his shadow? In the water? It’s a guitar. Enjoy it baby.
In Teen Daze News: There it is folks! Elegant Rhythms, my millionth LP, is out this Friday. I’m thrilled to have it out in the world. I worked on it for the past four years, and it encapsulates many of the highs and lows from across that time. I had the pleasure of working on it with a lot of different people (who I’m going to talk about next time), and when I think about the long process of making it, that’s where I feel the most joy.
Anyways, you can grab a disc on Bandcamp, or if the shipping costs are too much, try your favourite vinyl retailer!
Again, if you’re in Los Angeles, come by Gold Line on Thursday night. And if you’re in Idyllwild for FWB Fest this weekend, come see me and Rowan at the pool, or just say what’s up as you see me walking around! It’s a small fest, say hi!
Love y’all, see you next week!
Oh man, love that Akkerman track!
